Foot problems are especially common in seniors, for several reasons. So because September is Healthy Aging Month, today Dr. Joel Segalman, Dr. Stephen Lazaroff, and Dr. Brittany Ciaramello at Performance Foot & Ankle Specialists, LLC are sharing some foot care tips for seniors.
Here are just some of the foot problems seniors commonly face:
Keep your blood sugar under control. With the help of your healthcare team, keep your blood glucose in your target range. The best way to avoid diabetic foot ulcers is to maintain your blood sugar at proper levels. Glucose that isn’t controlled often leads to neuropathy, which causes a loss of feeling in the feet. This can lead to a sore being overlooked, which is extremely dangerous.
Keep your feet clean and moisturized. Wash them daily in warm water and dry them carefully. Apply a moisturizer to keep the skin from getting dry, but don't put it between your toes. Wear soft, absorbent socks that are made of natural fibers such as cotton and change them frequently.
Examine your feet every day. Call your podiatrist right away if you find a callus or corn, or if you have a cut, bruise, scrape, or blister that doesn't begin to heal within a day or two.
Always wear shoes and socks while walking.Walking barefoot is an invitation for minor injuries that may not heal properly. Make sure the lining of your shoes is smooth and that you clean your feet daily.
Keep the blood flowing. If your feet get tired, elevate them for a bit. Wiggle your ankles and toes for a few minutes, two or three times each day. Don't cross your legs for long periods of time, and above all, don't smoke.
